Julie Drury is an 8x marathoner, including the Chicago Marathon, NYC Marathon and the Boston Marathon a remarkable three times. Julie’s goal is to run all the major marathons wearing the TeamMito colours.
A long-time team sport athlete, Julie started running in 2009. She was motivated to run by her daughter Kate who was suffering from a then undiagnosed disease. Julie pursued running as a means of coping and finding time for herself amidst the stress of caring for a medically fragile child.
In 2011, Julie’s daughter Kate was diagnosed with SIFD a rare form of mitochondrial disease. Inspired Kate, Julie has led the Ottawa chapter of TeamMito to participate in Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend as part of #runScotia. Last year, TeamMito Ottawa had more than 150 runners and raised over $50,000 for mitochondrial disease research. To date they have raised close to $90,000.
What is most rewarding about being part of TeamMito is the incredible energy and passion of the people who are running for those who can’t. Julie is moved by the support for her family and her daughter Kate. Runners of all ages, participate with TeamMito at Ottawa Race Weekend, including some very fast TeamMito Kids. Julie hopes to grow the team again this year and support more teams at other race destinations in Halifax and PEI.
”It is wonderful to see the TeamMito shirts being worn in our city after the race. Meeting runners out on paths or the trails, or the kids who wear them to school. And they are always asked about Team Mito”, says Julie.
This year TeamMito will be back at Ottawa Race Weekend for Canada’s 150th Celebration. Julie has been chosen to be part of #TeamAwesome, a motivational group of runners who serve as ‘run ambassadors’ for Ottawa Race Weekend.
Julie enjoys sharing her passions via social media, and looks forward to inspiring and encouraging others to run by sharing her journey, training tips, and inspirational Team Mito messages.
Please join us in welcoming Julie officially as the Regional Lead for TeamMito Ottawa.
