If eligible for Employment Insurance benefits and you need to care for, or arrange care for a gravely ill child, you can collect income support over a span of six months. You are eligible for benefits of up to six weeks, plus the standard two week waiting period.

President’s Choice Children’s Charity
The President’s Choice Children’s Charity provides funding assistance for children with a physical or developmental disability. Must be 18 years of age or under. They need help with funding for mobility equipment, environmental modification or therapy.

Alberta – Persons with Developmental Disabilities, Alberta Government
The Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) Program is a provincial government program that provides funding for staff supports for adult Albertans with developmental disabilities.The PDD Program works with others to support adults with developmental disabilities to be included in community life and be as independent as possible. The program is administered and governed by six community boards. Funding is provided to support individuals in their home, work and social environments based on individual need. These services supplement the support of family, friends and community members and assist the individual to live as independently as they can in the community.

Childrens Special Services
A Provincially Funded program that provides services to families with medically complex, disabled, and/or cognitively delayed children in Manitoba. Services range from funding for equipment, funding for devices, funding for respite services, supplies, diapers (children over 3), assistive technology, home and vehicle modifications, and other situations on a case by case basis. Children who are referred are assigned a ‘case worker’ who will coordinate applications, and services for the childs needs.

Rehab Centre for Children
Provides equipment (ordered and custom built), devices (communication/daily living), recreation opportunities (bikes, sleds, etc), and assesments for seating (wheelchairs), and assistive technology (walkers, seating systems, strollers, etc etc) for children in Manitoba with disabilities. Also runs several ‘clinics’ out of their facility, including Muscular Dystrophy Clinics, Feeding Clinic, Assistive Technology Clinic, etc. Is the central ‘seating’ assesment clinic in Manitoba for children and coordinates wheelchair set ups, ordering and funding. Has a lending library with various peices of equipment for families to borrow. Has a Communication Centre that provides assesment and care for children with communication disorders. The Foundation will also assist in procuring funds for large scale purchases like modified bicycles, communication devices and the like.

Society for Manitobans with Disabilities
SMD provides adults with intake, counselling, work preperation/training, home modifications, funding access, and various other needs specific to differen disabilities. They also run the Provincial Parking Permit Program (for Handicap Parking Passes), and the Provincial Wheelchair Program. Upon referral (medical practitioner or self referral), SMD will assign a disabled adult a ‘caseworker’ who will help the individual navigate the system and aquire the needed supports.

Ontario -March of Dimes
HVMP provides funding for basic home and/or vehicle modifications. By reducing or eliminating life safety risks, these modifications enable children and adults with mobility restrictions to continue living in their homes, avoid job loss, and participate in their communities.
Ontario – Easter Seals
Easter Seals Ontario is dedicated to helping children, youth and young adults with physical disabilities achieve their full individual potential and future independence. Easter Seals funds disability solutions through financial assistance, summer camp, the Recreational Choices Funding Program, research, advocacy, and public and consumer education.
Easter Seals financial assistance program picks up where the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s Assistive Devices Program(ADP), insurance and other family resources leave off. The list of eligible equipment and services is reviewed regularly and priority is given to mobility and communication devices. Easter Seals’ funding contribution is based on availability of funds.
They also have the incontinence supplies grant program.

Ontario – Inherited Metabolic Diseases Program (IMD) (Ontario – Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care)
Through the Inherited Metabolic Diseases (IMD) program, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care covers the full cost of certain outpatient drugs, supplements and specialty foods used in the treatment of specific metabolic disorders.
This program will provide the components of the Mito Cocktail for someone identified as having a Mitochondrial Disease. Please see the page at http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/providers/program/drugs/funded_drug/pdf/list_food.pdf for a complete listing of disorders supported, and supplements/foods that are included in this program.
The application for this program must be submitted by the doctor who provides the diagnosis of Mitochondrial Disease.
The medications are provided directly through select hospital pharmacies (McMaster, London, Sick Kids, etc.).
Only those supplements supplied by the IMD program to the hospital pharmacies are available as part of this program.
Some mitochondrial disease patients require that their “Mito Cocktail” be compounded (for example, small children taking the cocktail orally). Compounding is not normally done by the hospital pharmacies. It is up to the patient to arrange with a compounding pharmacy to compound the supplements supplied by the hospital (additional charges as per the compounding pharmacy).

Ontario – Special Services at Home (SSAH)
The SSAH Program is available for children and adults with a developmental disability and children with a physical disability who are residents of Ontario. SSAH can help individuals with disabilities to live at home with their families by providing time-limited funding to purchase supports and services not available elsewhere in the community.

Tara “Boom” Houston Children’s Foundation
The TBHCF offers funding to families with children that have life threatening illnesses. They come highly recommended by families that have dealt with them. Their catchment area is London’s Children’s Hospital catchment.
