28 Aug 2011 - 12:00 AM to 6:00 PM
2011 Running On Empty Finish, Canmore, AB, 1101 Three Sisters Pkwy, Canmore, Alberta
Not for the faint of heart. Some mitochondria will be getting an extra workout to exhibit Mito Awareness Week.
Runners will be using their mitochondria to the max, and taking advantage of their health knowing so many others don’t have that opportunity!
Blaine Penny’s son Evan suffers from a severe form of MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASE that just over 3 years ago left him with significant brain damage. Overnight, Evan went from a typical little boy to a spastic quadriplegic bound to a wheel chair and can no longer eat or talk and struggles to generate enough energy to hold his head up or put a smile on his face.
One year ago a group of 20 runners ran the inaugural “Running on Empty” 100 km ultra marathon, which has now become an annual event.

EVENT GOALS:
Our goal for this event is to raise AWARENESS for mitochondrial disease and to raise funds to support the mission of MitoCanada.
MitoCanada is a newly founded registered charity that provides AWARENESS, SUPPORT and RESEARCH for mitochondrial disease.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
This is not a race, but is a charity run to go the distance for the cause. The run takes place on mountain trails starting in West Bragg Creek and finishing in Canmore (3 Sisters Development). This run is best suited to seasoned trail and ultra marathon runners, and is not well-suited for beginner runners.
There are options to run the full 100 km (West Bragg Creek to Canmore), or join for the final 50 or 25 km. We will run in ‘Pods’ of 4 to 6 runners for safety reasons and to minimize support required on course. Each pod essentially needs to be self-sufficient.
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?
Step 1: Simply email the event director (Blaine Penny) at blaine.penny@mitocanada.org if you are interested in running, volunteering, or fundraising. (Due to the remote nature of the run and for permitting/safety/logistics reasons, your endurance and trail running experience must be discussed and screened prior to you running).
Step 2: Register through SMITHEVENTS/Active.com
The event is capped at a maximum of 50 people.
ROUTE AND MAPS:
The route will start in West Bragg Creek and weave through some of the most stunning mountain trails Kananaskis Country has to offer, climbing several mountain passes and ridges, ending in the 3 Sisters Development of Canmore.
