Dr. Aneal Khan, SC, MD, FAAP, FRCPC, FCCMG

Dr. Khan is a specialist in inborn errors of metabolism, a medical geneticist and pediatrician. He works out of the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Alberta and his practice is 80% clinical and 20% research. Dr. Khan’s research is focused on interventions in patients with rare diseases. Past work includes patients on enzyme replacement therapy trials. He has a special interest in interventional therapies, mitochondrial diseases, lysosomal storage diseases, bone disease and cardiomyopathies.
Dr. Khan’s research interests include:
1. In vivo assessment of bone architecture using high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.
2. Improving muscle performance using a rapid vertical alternating platform in patients with degenerative neuromuscular disorders.
3. Cardiomyopathies of genetic origin.
Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky M.D. PhD. FRCPC
Professor, Department Pediatrics and Medicine, Division of Neuromuscular and Neurometabolic Disorders

Dr. Tarnopolsky’s main clinical interest is the assessment and treatment of patients with neuromuscular and neurometabolic disorders, with a primary focus on mitochondrial disease. He follows a large number of patients with myopathies, neuropathies and neuromuscular junction defects. His other major area of focus is neurometabolic disorders, particularly those involving the mitochondria as well as other metabolic disorders, such as: glycogen storage disease, fatty acid oxidation defects, etc. In the Neuromuscular Disease Clinic, Dr. Tarnopolsky’s team performs: Muscle biopsies, lumbar punctures, genetic testing, skin biopsy, fibroblast culture, all forms of exercise testing, EMG, and single fibre EMG.
From a research standpoint, Dr. Tarnopolsky’s main interest is the assessment of pharmacologic, nutritional and exercise interventions as treatments for patients with neuromuscular and neurometabolic disorders, especially mitochondrial disease.
In 2010, Dr. Tarnopolsky was appointed the inaugural McMaster Children’s Hospital / Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Chair in Neuromuscular Disorders.
Dr. Tarnopolsky is co-chair of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) Scientific and Medical Advisory Board.
